Transfer rumor round-up: Manchester City and Chelsea circling, but Madrid aren't selling

Both Manchester City — reportedly eyeing a strike partnership with Erling Haaland — and Chelsea, via a tip-off from former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, have been linked with moves. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has been clear there's no appetite to sell, though reports suggest he plans to address Mbappé's recent conduct internally. Nothing here is confirmed by the club or player — treat it as speculation until it is.

History made: a second World Cup Golden Boot, but no trophy to go with it

Mbappé scored 10 goals at the 2026 World Cup — including a brace in the third-place playoff — to win the Golden Boot for a second time, joining no one else in that club and taking his all-time World Cup tally to 22, ahead of Lionel Messi's 21. The medal was bittersweet: France lost their semi-final and then fell 6-4 to England in the third-place match, finishing fourth. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final to claim their second World Cup.

Back-to-back: a second consecutive Mahou Five Star Player award

Real Madrid named Mbappé their Mahou Five Star Player of the Season for 2025/26 — his second in a row. The club pointed to his back-to-back Pichichi Trophies and Champions League top-scorer finish as the headline case: 42 goals in 44 matches across all competitions on the season.

Europe's best finisher: how he topped the Champions League charts

15 goals in 11 games made Mbappé the 2025/26 Champions League's top scorer — his second time topping the competition. The run included braces against Marseille, Monaco, and Benfica, a hat-trick against Kairat Almaty, four goals in a single match against Olympiacos, and a goal in each leg of the quarter-final against Bayern Munich. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (17 in 2013/14, 16 in 2015/16) has scored more in a single Champions League campaign.

Pichichi Trophy: back-to-back, and a piece of Real Madrid history

25 goals in 31 LaLiga matches were enough to retain the Pichichi Trophy, ahead of Vedat Muriqi (23) and Ante Budimir (17). It's a lower tally than his 31-goal debut season (2024/25), but it makes him the first Real Madrid player to win back-to-back Pichichis since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2014/15, and the first player in LaLiga to do it in consecutive seasons since Lionel Messi in 2020/21.

New Year's Eve knee injury: a longer road back than expected

Real Madrid confirmed on 31 December 2025 that Mbappé had sprained his left knee after complaining of discomfort in training the day before; an MRI found a lesion in the lateral ligament. The initial outlook was around three weeks, with a possible return pencilled in for 25 January against Villarreal. It proved more complicated: reports described his posterior cruciate ligament as "at its limit," and gym-based rehab replaced fieldwork into February. He played through parts of January before a further three-and-a-half-week absence. By late March, Mbappé personally dismissed rumors of surgery or a World Cup-ending injury as "completely baseless" — and by the tournament itself, he said the knee issue was "all gone."
